An antique ladder back carver armchair in a traditional provincial style. The chair is constructed from mixed hardwoods, featuring a solid elm panel seat and a three-slat ladder back frame. The curved top rail and vertical side posts are finished with simple turned finials. The scrolled open arms are supported by short turned spindles, leading to a contoured seat with a central concave recess. The substructure consists of turned front legs and slightly raked back legs, joined by an H-stretcher configuration and a high front stretcher. The joinery appears to be of traditional mortise and tenon construction. No maker’s marks, stamps, or labels are visible on the frame or underside. The books and storage containers shown in the background are not included in this lot.
Condition report:
The chair is in worn, as-found condition with significant surface wear throughout the finish. There is heavy scuffing and loss of finish to the arms (photo 1) and the seat (photo 2). The underside of the seat shows extensive white spotting and discolouration, possibly from past moisture (photo 3). The feet are heavily worn with visible chips and wood loss at the base of the legs (photo 3). The finish is uneven and has darkened significantly with age, showing various scratches and small indentations across the frame (photo 4).
