Lot 326: A West African Style Carved Wooden Mask

This auction ended on October 14, 2026.

Start price: £5

Estimated price: £5 - £10

Buyer's Premium: 20%

A West African style carved wooden mask featuring a characteristically elongated form. The piece is hand-carved from a single block of tropical hardwood, possibly suar or albizia, with a decorative light brown finish and dark stained accents. The mask is designed with a rounded forehead section bearing incised geometric and cross-hatched patterns within recessed borders. Pierced slit eyes are situated above a broad, tapering nose and a hollowed-out mouth aperture. The base of the mask is flanked by two large, curved tusks or horns. The reverse side shows evidence of hand-tooling with rough-hewn chisel marks throughout the hollowed interior. An unreadable small white rectangular adhesive label is present on the interior surface. No maker’s marks, signatures, or country of origin marks are visible on the object.

Condition report:

The mask is in good overall condition with no visible structural damage. Minor surface scuffs and shallow scratches consistent with handling are visible on the polished forehead and the tips of the lower horns (photo 1). The interior shows a raw, unfinished texture which is a feature of the hand-carving process (photo 2). There is no evidence of active insect damage, cracks, or professional restoration.
