A collection of studio pottery comprising functional and decorative stoneware and earthenware vessels. The group features a large footed stoneware bowl with a textured, ochre-toned volcanic glaze to the exterior and a central well of pooled and crackled green glass to the interior. The base of this bowl is incised with the characters AW. Included is a pair of sculptural earthenware candlesticks with undulating striped stems, scrolled green handles, and heart-shaped cups with red interiors. One candlestick base bears a hand-painted black mark within a circle reading RC. The assortment also contains a spherical stoneware vase with heavy vertical ribbing and a radiating incised rim, and a small footed porcelain bowl hand-painted with geometric terracotta and gold lustre motifs, marked to the footring with a sun-burst motif above the character W. A tapered stoneware cup with a wavy gold-lustred rim and circular piercings near the base features an impressed square seal mark to the underside containing a stylized character D. The lot further includes a stoneware dish in the form of a fish with blue floral decoration, bearing an impressed square mark reading M, alongside a square floral plate, a green tankard, and other sculptural vessels.
Condition report:
The collection is in generally good studio condition. One candlestick shows a visible hairline crack near the base of the scrolled green handle (photo 6). The drip-glaze cup shows minor rubbing to the gold lustre on the rim (photo 10). A small chip is visible on the rim of the square plate at the bottom left corner (photo 1). The large volcanic-style bowl and the crescent-shaped vessel have inherent surface irregularities and firing fissures typical of the manufacturing process (photo 2, photo 12).
