A traditional fireplace screen of rectangular form, constructed from an embossed brass sheet mounted on a black-finished wooden core. The central repoussé panel depicts a rustic interior scene in the Dutch tavern style, featuring a group of four figures gathered around a central table, with a hearth and fire visible to the right. This central scene is framed by an ornate border composed of repeating scrolling acanthus and shell motifs. The screen is equipped with two out-swept brass feet for stability and a decorative arched brass carry handle at the top. The reverse is finished in a uniform black coating. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the front or the reverse of the piece.
Condition report:
The brass front surface exhibits significant oxidation and tarnish, most notably across the lower right section and the bottom border (photo 1). The embossed details show some softening to the high points, consistent with historical cleaning (photo 2). The black finish on the reverse shows minor surface scuffs and a small area of surface loss and peeling located near the bottom left corner (photo 3). The handle and feet remain securely attached and appear structurally sound (photo 1).
