A handmade Vi-Spring mattress, identified by its labels as The Herald model. The mattress is constructed with 1326 tensioned pocketed springs arranged in a honeycomb pattern, bedded in layers of soft cotton felt and a needle-teased hair pad. It is upholstered in a cream-coloured damask fabric featuring a scrolling foliate pattern, finished with hand-tufted woollen tufts and side-stitching for structural integrity. A large rectangular fabric label stitched to the surface reads THE HERALD followed by a description of the materials and construction, featuring a candle and holder logo above VI-SPRING / HANDMADE IN ENGLAND • ESTABLISHED 1901. A secondary smaller tag stitched below reads MEDIUM SPRINGING. A further small adhesive label is present to the left of the main label, partially legible as 1301R. This lot comprises the bed only; the pictures and other household items shown in the background are not included.

Condition report:

The mattress appears to be in good, clean condition with no visible staining or tears to the damask fabric (photo 1). The hand-tufting remains secure and the side-stitching appears intact. A small adhesive label is present on the surface (photo 2). The mattress is currently stored in a domestic environment.
