This lot comprises several items relating to British military service and commemoration. The primary military awards include a 1939-1945 Star, a Burma Star, and a Defence Medal (1939-1945). The campaign stars are struck in bronze and feature the Royal Cypher GRI VI within a circlet. The Defence Medal is struck in cupro-nickel, with the obverse showing the bareheaded effigy of King George VI and the reverse depicting two lions flanking an oak tree. A second Defence Medal is also included, housed in an unrelated Ronson Varaflame presentation box. Accompanying the medals is a hand-tinted or sepia-toned photograph of a British soldier in service dress seated behind a Vickers .303 machine gun, presented in a wooden frame. The collection further includes a 1977 Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Crown (25 pence) coin and two brass-toned metallic objects that appear to be deformed projectiles or spent bullet fragments. None of the medals are named, consistent with standard issue to British personnel.
Condition report:
The campaign medals and ribbons exhibit natural ageing and a darkened patina; ribbons are intact with some minor fraying and light surface soiling. The photograph is in poor condition, showing extensive surface crazing and deep cracks across the print. The commemorative coin and brass fragments show expected wear and tarnish. The Ronson box is an unrelated later addition used for storage and exhibits some internal staining.
