A lot comprising two mismatched side chairs of mahogany construction. The first chair is designed in the George III manner, featuring a pierced back splat with central circular and X-shaped motifs beneath a shaped top rail with carved ears. The frame is supported by square tapered front legs joined by an H-stretcher and a recessed front stretcher, with slightly raked back legs. It is presently covered with a loose-fitting tapestry textile depicting elephants and lions over a base of worn brown velvet. The second chair is a Victorian example from the mid-to-late 19th century, featuring an ornate, pierced, and scroll-carved back with a central shield-shaped motif. It is supported on turned front legs terminating in bun feet. This chair features a matching loose tapestry cover over a red and black patterned textile secured with brass upholstery studs. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible on either piece.
Condition report:
Both chairs exhibit significant surface wear consistent with age and use, including scuffs, scratches, and finish loss across the mahogany frames. The upholstery on both items requires professional restoration; the tapestry covers are loose and non-fitting, while the underlying textiles show heavy wear, marks, and loss of pile. The wooden frames appear structurally sound.
