This hand-carved sculpture depicts the head of an Asian elephant, identified by its twin-domed forehead, grasping a textured timber log within its curled trunk. The piece is crafted from a single block of dense, reddish-brown hardwood, exhibiting naturalistic features with incised details defining the texture of the ears, trunk, and eyes. The reverse of the carving is flat and features a square mortise hole, indicating its intended use as a decorative wall bracket, corbel, or architectural element. An additional square aperture is present on the top-rear of the head. The surface retains a polished finish throughout. No maker’s marks or signatures are present.
Condition report:
The sculpture exhibits a vertical split running from the lower edge through the centre of the left ear. There is a small, square-cut hole on the front left end of the carved log. Two square mortise holes are present for mounting, one on the reverse and one on the top of the head. General surface scuffs, minor abrasions, and age-related wear are visible, consistent with use and handling.
