A Meiji-Labax Model TM-1A compound monocular microscope, manufactured in Japan and distributed by the Open University for home experiment kits. The instrument features a metal stand with a grey hammer-tone finish, a curved limb, and a rectangular black-finished stage fitted with two slide clips. It is equipped with a triple revolving nosepiece, coarse and fine focus adjustment knobs, and a disc diaphragm beneath the stage. The optics comprise one removable HW10X eyepiece and two objective lenses, one with a red band marked S40 0.65 and another with a blue band. The body tube is marked MEIJI-LABAX Model TM-1A in white lettering. A white label on the base reads TO BE USED ONLY IN ACCORDANCE WITH INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED BY THE OPEN UNIVERSITY. The microscope is housed in its original plywood transit box with a hinged door, containing moulded polystyrene foam inserts. Several instructional and warning labels are affixed to the box, including one on the front reading DO NOT OPEN UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THE INSTRUCTION SHEET IN THE HOME EXPERIMENT KIT BOOKLET and another on the top with handwritten text reading Checked and instructions to Remove transit screw.
Condition report:
The microscope is in good aesthetic condition with minimal wear to the painted surfaces. Mechanical focus movements appear functional, although they have not been tested for precision. Lenses appear present and show no obvious external damage; however, internal optical clarity and the potential presence of fungal growth have not been professionally verified. One objective is missing from the triple revolving nosepiece. The wooden box shows typical signs of age and student use, including surface scratches, scuffs, and some minor chipping to the wood. The internal polystyrene inserts are discoloured and show wear from contact with the instrument.
