This nineteenth-century storage chest is constructed from solid mahogany with secondary timber used for the interior base boards. The rectangular carcase features robust hand-cut dovetail joinery at all four corners. The lid is formed from two wide mahogany planks reinforced with two wooden cleats on the underside. The interior shows evidence of a missing candle box or small till on the left-hand side, with only the support rail remaining. Hardware consists of three brass butt hinges, a central brass lock mechanism, and flush-mounted brass carrying handles at each end in the campaign style. A white adhesive auction lot label with the number 21360 is present on the front left corner. Faint, illegible stamped characters are visible on one of the lid cleats but are too worn to be transcribed.
Condition report:
The chest is in fair antique condition. There is a significant structural split running the full length of one of the boards on the lid. The mahogany surface exhibits widespread minor scratches, scuffs, and small indentations consistent with age and functional use. The interior base boards show historical water staining and dust accumulation. All brass hardware is heavily oxidised and tarnished. The key is missing.
