A large utilitarian country-style storage trunk of plank construction, manufactured from pine. The exterior features a dark, heavily distressed stain or paint finish in a black or very dark green tone. The chest is fitted with a hinged lid that includes a projecting wooden batten along the front edge. The interior is unfinished natural pine, currently lined with brown paper and various mid-to-late 20th-century newspaper fragments. Visible text within the lining includes references to Waterfields, Pat Wilson, Concorde flights, and fire safety notices. A small sticker to the interior reads LO/LO. A white inventory label numbered 4917 is adhered to one exterior corner. Hardware consists of a central brass lock plate and two internal butt hinges. No key is present.
Condition report:
The chest is in a well-used rustic condition. The exterior finish displays extensive distress with scuffs, deep scratches, and significant areas of paint loss, particularly along the edges and lid, exposing the underlying pale timber. There are visible gaps between some planks consistent with natural timber shrinkage over time. The interior shows typical signs of age-related wear, light staining, and deterioration of the paper lining. No structural failures or active pest damage are evident.
