This oil on canvas painting by Graham Jardine depicts a maritime industrial scene of two shipwrights working within the large wooden ribbing of a vessel’s hull. The composition utilizes a dramatic, wide-angle perspective to emphasise the sweeping curves of the ship’s construction. One figure is depicted standing, actively shaping a timber with a traditional adze, while the other sits nearby in observation. The work is executed in a contemporary realist style with confident brushwork and a palette of earthy tones, ochres, and browns, punctuated by the blue of the worker’s shirt and the sky visible through an opening above. The painting is signed in the lower left corner Graham Jardine x 97. It is housed in an ornate, heavy gilt-moulded wood and composition frame featuring foliate scroll motifs at the corners and centres, accented with a recessed cream-coloured linen slip. The verso reveals the canvas stretched over a wooden frame secured with staples, with a small white label printed with the number 78 located at the upper left corner.
Condition report:
The painting is in very good overall condition. There is a light accumulation of surface dust on both the paint surface and the linen slip. The ornate frame exhibits minor nicks, scuffs, and small losses to the gilding along the edges and decorative mouldings. On the verso, there is minor oxidation visible on the staples securing the canvas to the wooden stretcher.
