A pair of framed mid-20th-century needlework pictures. Each rectangular piece depicts a single gundog, likely an English Setter, in a pointing stance within a stylised grass setting. The subjects are rendered in profile, one in white and lemon-tan thread and the other in white and black. The embroidery is worked in long and short stitches to simulate the texture of fur, using fine, high-sheen thread on a light-coloured silk or fine linen ground. The works are presented in dark-stained wooden frames with a simple stepped moulding. There are no visible signatures, maker’s marks, or labels on the front or reverse of either piece.
Condition report:
The embroidery appears to be in good overall condition with vibrant thread and no visible losses. There is minor rippling to the fabric ground within the frames. A small discoloured spot is visible on the lower body of the lemon-and-white dog. The wooden frames show light surface wear and scuffing consistent with age. The brown paper backing on the reverse of both frames is brittle and displays significant tearing.
