A British made carved oak aneroid banjo barometer, likely dating from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. This lot comprises a single weather instrument housed in a dark-stained oak case decorated with hand-carved foliate and leaf motifs at the pediment and terminal. The main barometer features a circular silvered dial protected by a glass cover, inscribed with weather conditions ranging from “STORMY” to “VERY DRY”. The dial includes supplementary forecasting text such as “WET OR MORE WIND” and directional indications for wind changes. The bottom of the dial is printed with “BRITISH MADE” and “ANEROID BAROMETER” in black lettering. The neck of the case contains an integrated thermometer with a dual-scale display marked “FAHRENHEIT” and “CENTIGRADE” at the base. The instrument is fitted with a blued steel indicator hand and a brass manually-adjustable reference hand. A white adhesive label reading “J1213T” is attached to the glass, and a small lot sticker numbered “307” is present on the case neck.

Condition report:

The dark oak case shows general surface wear and a visible accumulation of dust within the carved areas (photo 4). The silvered dial face exhibits significant oxidation and tarnishing across the surface (photo 1). There is visible dust and debris trapped on the interior side of the barometer glass. The liquid column within the thermometer is continuous with no signs of separation (photo 2). The mechanical movement of the barometer has not been tested for accuracy. Both the barometer and thermometer glass appear intact without cracks or significant chips.
