A maritime oil on canvas depicting a large three-masted sailing vessel navigating a turquoise sea under a cloudy sky. The work is executed in a traditional representational style with textured impasto brushwork, particularly evident in the white caps of the waves and the billowing clouds. Several smaller sailing vessels and a rowing boat with figures are shown in the surrounding waters. The painting is housed in a wide, tiered gilt-wood frame with a beaded inner border and a distressed, crackled finish. The work is signed to the lower right corner with an incised signature in the wet paint reading P. Whitlock.
Condition report:
The painting exhibits some surface dirt and a small indentation or pressure mark to the canvas on the left side (photo 1). The frame shows some minor losses and age-related wear to the gilding, with a deliberate crackled finish to the surface (photo 5). No further damage or repairs are visible from the provided images.
