This auction ended on September 30, 2026.

Start price: £10

Estimated price: £10 - £20

Buyer's Premium: 20%

Sold for: £10

This lot comprises two pieces of glazed earthenware pottery featuring a utilitarian design, including one tall pitcher and one wide-mouthed jar. The pitcher is constructed from a buff-toned terracotta clay body with a tapering neck, a single loop handle attached at the neck and shoulder, and a small pouring lip at the rim. The interior of the neck and the rim are finished with a dark honey-coloured lead glaze, while the exterior remains unglazed. The second piece is a cylindrical jar or crock with two lug-style handles and a thick, rolled rim. The exterior is unglazed terracotta, while the interior features a deep amber-coloured glaze throughout. Both items are hand-thrown with visible turning marks to the interior bases. No manufacturer’s marks, stamps, or signatures are visible on either piece.

Condition report:

Both items show signs of significant utilitarian wear. The pitcher displays several small chips and abrasions to the glazed rim and pouring lip (photo 1). The unglazed exterior body shows surface staining and areas of white mineral efflorescence, particularly towards the base (photo 2). The jar features heavy wear and multiple chips along the rolled rim (photo 3). One lug handle on the jar is heavily worn with a portion of the surface material missing (photo 2). The interior glazing on both pieces remains largely intact, though there is minor pitting and surface scratching consistent with age and use.
