This lot comprises two framed works on paper. The first is a monochrome etching on paper depicting a reclining female nude, rendered in a fluid, linear style with botanical motifs in the foreground. The work features handwritten text in the lower right corner, which is not clearly legible as a name or signature at this resolution. The etching is presented within a cream mount and a simple black frame. The second work is a pencil and wash architectural drawing of a church and street scene. The verso of the second frame bears a printed white adhesive label reading JOHN CONSTABLE / St Peter’s Church, Sudbury from the south east 1814-15 / Pencil and wash, 16.3 x 14.3 cm / John Hilary Travel, Sudbury, Suffolk / © Gainsborough’s House Society / Limited print in aid of the Quay 2000 Appeal / No. 041 / September, 1993. The label includes a handwritten signature in black ink, possibly reading A. L. This print is housed in a gilt-wood frame with a beaded inner border and a multi-layered pink and white mount.

Condition report:

Both works show evidence of age and environmental exposure. The etching exhibits significant foxing and brown spotting throughout the paper support, particularly visible in the margins and across the central image (photo 2). The paper also shows general toning and discolouration. The pencil and wash print appears in good overall condition with no visible foxing; however, the gilt frame shows minor surface wear and small losses to the finish at the corners (photo 3). The backing paper and label on the verso of the Constable print show some creasing and minor tearing at the top edge where the hanging cord is attached (photo 4).
