Estimated price: £100 - £200

Buyer's Premium: 20%

Sold for: £300

A George III style chest of drawers constructed from quartersawn oak. The carcass features a moulded top above a configuration of two short over three long graduated drawers, flanked by reeded quarter columns to the front corners and supported by bracket feet. The primary wood is oak, displaying prominent medullary rays or tiger grain characteristic of quartersawn timber, while the drawer linings and backboards are composed of a mix of oak and pine. The drawers are assembled with hand-cut dovetail joints. The piece is fitted with brass swan neck handles on decorative pierced backplates and matching pierced brass escutcheons. While each drawer front features three brass plates for symmetry, only the central escutcheon on the long drawers and the individual escutcheons on the short drawers house functional locks. The back of the chest consists of wide vertical planks. No maker’s marks or labels are present on the piece.

Condition report:

The chest is in a worn condition requiring restoration. The top shows significant finish loss, water rings, circular staining, and several deep gouges and scratches (photo 4). General wear and scuffing are visible to the drawer mouldings and the bracket feet (photo 1). The brass hardware displays a heavy natural patina and oxidation (photo 7). The side panels show surface scratches and a dulled finish (photo 2). The backboards have heavy staining and surface abrasion (photo 10). A large horizontal shrinkage split is visible in the timber base of the bottom long drawer (photo 8).
